Goals
« on: January 07, 2019, 11:30:30 am »
My tentative plan is to update this with additional replies with new monthly goals because I'll be changing them as I make progress each month. I am starting slow because setting challenging but achievable goals is very important to me in the beginning.

Fitness/Physical Health
  • drink 40+ Oz's of water daily (Not nearly enough, but this is my minimum to keep me accountable and tracking on the weekends when it is easy to go lax.) 70+ Oz's of water daily. (My doctor mandated this change the week of 1/10)
  • go to the gym once per week (Minimum to get me back into the routine of going after having two months of bad health that knocked me off kilter.)
  • Go to the gym an extra day three times over the course of the month. (I want to get back to going 3-4 times a week, if not more, but I don't want to set myself up for failure just starting out. This way I have three extra gym days (7 total) for the month, and any extras are gravy.)

Mental Health
  • Read 1 chapter per day in the self-help book I got that is meant to give me techniques to overcome my sometimes troublesome self-image. (This is my goal for the next 9 8 days) - I got to a point in the book where it doesn't make as much sense if you haven't completed the prior exercises, so I am going to reboot and revisit the earlier chapters earlier than I planned to make sure I can complete and understand the later ones.
  • Once I have read the book, I'm going to focus on one chapter per day to re-visit and really think about/process how to incorporate the teachings in my daily life. (The next 9 days.)[/s
  • After I've finished with the book I'm going to evaluate what would be a good next step based on what my needs are and what I feel I have accomplished by completing the above.

Creativity
  • Write 200 words per week on a creative project of my choosing. (Not a lot, but again I'm trying to get back to a habit building place.)

That fits my philosophy so I am glad to see it!

sounds doable!! I am hoping to get back in the gym myself. I went last in march. I have a SEVERE iron deficiency!! ;)

I also like gravy!!

girl, you can't leave me hanging like that! What's the book?!?!?

Creativity

Again, sounds TOTALLY doable and like it'll be a stretch for you!

You don't have to diminish your goals. They might not seem like much to others but WHO CARES they're YOUR goals!! They aren't meant to encourage, stretch, and grow someone else.

I like this goal. And I can't wait to read your stuff :)

I feel like my goals are baby baby baby steps because I used to be doing so much better. Working on not diminishing my own attempts/efforts/accomplishments is part of why I need the book, haha. Logically I know I am "lapping everyone still on the couch" but it never feels like "enough". I am working hard on feeling like enough.

Oh you poor thing. :( I hope you can get back in the gym soon (relatively), too. Glad you are getting close to that goal, though.

This is the book! Overcoming Low Self-Esteem: A Self-Help Guide Using Cognitive Behavioral Techniques https://www.amazon.com/dp/0465012663/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_fw7mCbFYG4RMY

There is a new version out but I was able to get a used copy of this edition for pretty cheap from a Goodwill in TN of all places through Amazon, so I figured I would start here and see what sticks.

What made it pop out for me was the fact that it uses behavioral therapy so it's actionable steps/things to do when you start feeling bad which is what I need. I will let you know how it goes! I finished chapter 1 for today and so far I like it a lot.

When a MASTER chef makes a lovely meal, to serve to the Queen of England, does the meal preparation begin when he walks into the kitchen? Or does it begin years or even decades before, when he first found his love of cooking and decided to be a chef?

YES you are doing baby, baby baby baby steps. FULL STOP.

I don't like to think of where I USED to be. Thinking of used to be, or SHOULD be tends to add an element of shame to where you are now. I don't think one can shame themselves into a person that they love. This is not meant as admonishment, rather as a way to reframe your thoughts.

You are where you are. And that's the PERFECT place for NOW.

Listen to Rafiki, don't make me use my stick! Let the place that you USED to be, help guide you back there. I know it sounds so wishy-washy but it's about reframing your thoughts from failure "I used to be X" to success "I CAN do V now, and I know I can do X because I have done it in the past".

Oh you poor thing. :( I hope you can get back in the gym soon (relatively), too. Glad you are getting close to that goal, though.

Yup!! I could probably go NOW except for the proximity of Anytime Fitness and the super steady :P income stream that pays for gas

That sounds pretty neat! I don't struggle like I USED to with self esteem, but I do understand that struggle. I hope it helps you, because you're pretty fricken awesome, my friend.

I think when you get a chance to read the Mind Council, it will resonate with you as well.

My week has been rough. I went back to the doctor this week for the vertigo I've been battling since the end of December. She thinks it's a result of dehydration and low blood pressure. (I stopped hydrating well at the beginning of November when I got super sick and I've been trying to get back up to where I was, but obviously not fast enough for my body's liking lol.)

My BP was like 90/60 at the appointment which she was not okay with. I guess I was not okay with it either? I don't know blood pressure things unless it's high.

So my water intake goal has been changed, due to necessity from 44 oz a day to 44 oz during WORKDAY HOURS and 70-90 oz total for the 24 hour period.

Despite the frequent bouts of dizziness and other stupid I got to the gym twice this week. I didn't get to do everything I wanted to on the second venture, but I went! (And tbh I am not out of the woods with the vertigo so when I start feeling dizzy/nauseated I have to stop what I'm doing because I don't want to end up back in the hospital.)

I also have read a chapter of the book each day, except for today. I'm about to read now, and then will be working on fighting the book dragon until it's time or sleep.

Wish me strength since you don't believe in/like luck, lol.

generally, we prefer a systolic (top number) of at LEAST 90. We also look at the gap between the numbers (so 90-60=30 which isn't a very big gap. That can indicate a lot of things and we like it bigger :P

In the ICU, depending on the patient and their "normal" we want >100 systolic. We also like the mean arterial pressure to be >65 (the machines do it automatically but it basically takes the top number and the bottom number and throws in some fairy dust and a few choice words :P ) with 90/60 your map is 70. So it's not OMFG low. >65 map is the "omfg" of lows.

So my water intake goal has been changed, due to necessity from 44 oz a day to 44 oz during WORKDAY HOURS and 70-90 oz total for the 24 hour period.

that sounds good. I recommend if you are having a hard time, to set an alarm on your phone that goes off every thirty min. You can chug-a-lug and get your drinks in!

Despite the frequent bouts of dizziness and other stupid I got to the gym twice this week. I didn't get to do everything I wanted to on the second venture, but I went! DO NOT MAKE YOURSELF SICK

It is better to skip the gym and just do a light walk and stay healthy than to force things and get sick!!

I also have read a chapter of the book each day, except for today. I'm about to read now and then will be working on fighting the book dragon until it's time or sleep.

DO IT!!!

Wish me strength since you don't believe in/like luck, lol.

Creativity
  • Write 200 words per week on a creative project of my choosing.

I love this habit! It doesn’t mater if it’s 5 minutes, 100 words, 200 words or more, just starting with pen to paper works the habit. Some days the 200 may be torture, others maybe 1,000 will flow. But the habit is a good start.

Can’t wait to see your growth!

CBT ftw!
